The company hopes this will expand access to advanced therapeutics manufacturing not only in Australia, but also across Asia-Pacific.

By: Patrick Lavery
Editor’s Take: The cell and gene therapy sector in Australia is growing rapidly, making therapeutic manufacturing a high priority.
Viral Vector Manufacturing Facility (VVMF), a viral vector CDMO, received a good manufacturing practice (GMP) License to Manufacture Therapeutic Goods. This comes from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and applies to VVMF’s Sydney facility.
This facility will support clients developing gene therapies, genetically modified cell therapies, and other advanced therapeutics that require viral vectors. Its design provides end-to-end process and analytical development, GMP manufacturing, and quality control (QC) testing services.
To be specific, the license authorizes GMP manufacture of replication-incompetent viral vectors using recombinant technology. The viral vectors can be manufactured either as sterile APIs or medicinal products, along with associated QC testing.
According to VVMF, the cell and gene therapy sector in Australia is growing rapidly, making this a “significant milestone.” As noted, VVMF can manufacture viral vectors under GMP conditions, supporting development and global commercialization of advanced therapeutic products. However, it also strengthens Australia’s advanced therapeutics ecosystem by providing local access to high-quality viral vector manufacturing capabilities.
The Sydney facility reduces reliance on overseas suppliers, thereby strengthening domestic capabilities throughout the advanced therapeutics value chain in Australia. VVMF desires to expand access to advanced therapeutics manufacturing across not only Australia, but also the Asia-Pacific region. The company says this will create new viral vector manufacturing opportunities for biotechnology companies, researchers, and therapy developers.
TGA’s granting of the license follows a comprehensive assessment of VVMF’s facilities, quality systems, manufacturing operations, and operational capability. Together, according to VVMF, these attributes demonstrated the company’s commitment to meeting rigorous GMP manufacturing standards.
“Receiving our TGA Manufacturing License is a defining moment for VVMF,” CEO Stephen Thompson said. “This achievement establishes a sovereign capability that will enable innovators to access world-class viral vector manufacturing services locally … Ultimately, [it helps] bring these therapies closer to the patients who need them.”
